Originally named South Bank for 1951’s Festival of Britain, when the area was the subject of major regeneration and development, this stretch of prime central London riverfront has remained a destination for lovers of art & culture due to it’s proximity to the West End, but also because it is the very antithesis of old London, replacing cramped streets and buildings with a thoroughly modern masterplan of wide boulevards, public spaces and modernist architecture housing some of the Capital’s most popular cultural institutions.

Why South Bank?
The Southbank Centre, BFI Southbank, the National Theatre and Royal Festival Hall are all leading institutions of The Arts, but also fine examples of modernist architecture that gives the area it’s unique identity. The culture loving crowd and attractive riverside location give the South Bank a completely different vibe to it’s immediate neighbours north of the river, a far more relaxed feel than much of Central London.
A Modernist Urban Promenade
The western end of the South Bank is dominated by the London Eye, surrounded by Jubilee Gardens public park, and now a highly sought after place to live with the development of South Bank Place. A plethora of bars, restaurants and street food pop-ups line the riverbank leading to the ever-popular Gabriel’s Wharf and on to the Oxo Tower with it’s design stores and Conran restaurant, ending up at Blackfriars.
